After early studies of Scottish rural life in plays such as A Window in Thrums 1889, his reputation as a dramatist was established with The Professor's Love Story 1894 and The Little Minister 1897. Later plays include Quality Street 1901 and What Every Woman Knows 1908. Created a baronet 1913.
